Making Your Internet Banking Safer

Like all other UK banks, we have added extra security checks when you use your Internet Banking. You will start to notice an increase in the number of times you are asked to provide a One Time Passcode (OTP). These codes are usually 6 numeric digits long.

These are extra checks that have been introduced to help reduce fraud by validating that it is you making the payment or accessing your internet banking.

These checks will happen when you:
• Shop online
• Log-in to your Internet Banking
• Add a new payee

An OTP will be sent via SMS and/or email address registered under your account with us. Each OTP will be unique to the transaction and you must populate it in the appropriate field within your internet banking or as part of an online card purchase.

It is important that:
• you ensure that our records always hold your up-to-date mobile phone number and email address
• you have your mobile phone to hand when you log-in to your internet banking and if making an on-line payment
otherwise, you might not be able to make your purchase or log-in.

Additional Information:

• Never share your OTP with another person, not even with any of our employees.
• Review the full OTP message, checking it accurately describes your transaction.
• Before using an OTP for an on-line payment, double check the payment details to make sure you are buying:
 • the item you want
 • at the right price
 • from a genuine seller
• It is fraud if anyone asks you to tell them your OTP. If anyone asks, contact us immediately.
• It is likely to be fraud if you receive an OTP and you are not making a transaction. In such instances, you must contact us immediately and do not share the OTP with anyone on the phone, in person, or on-line.
• It is fraud if someone phones you and tells you to expect an OTP and to read it to them.
If this happens, contact us immediately.
• Examples of how a fraudster may try to persuade you to give them your OTP:
 • they need to refund your account
 • they need to secure your account
 • they need to stop a payment
